Mixed Use / Mixed Income
Through the mixing of residential and commercial—such as with shops below and residential above—work, play, school, shopping, and services all are within walking distance of one another. With mixed-use neighborhoods, citizens are out on the streets, walking and bicycling, and streets become safe and child and pedestrian friendly.

When low-, middle-, and upper-income housing is located in the same neighborhood and gentrification-taming strategies (e.g., using rising values to finance affordable housing) are implemented, perpetual affordability is available for future generations. Mixed-income neighborhoods also happen with a mix of housing types and creative floor plans, such as multiple master suites and kitchenettes, sub-metering of utilities, smaller lots, and home-size minimums.
