Our work at the 2010 Turnaround Challenge is to help communities envision, design and create resilient and sustainable ‘urban villages’ that promote comfortable and affordable housing, high quality of life, meaningful livelihood and conservation.
These mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhoods integrate social, environmental, and economic systems and produce multiple benefits from individual functions. They can curb sprawl, preserve habitat, significantly reduce our carbon footprint (and therefore global warming), conserve water, strengthen community, enhance safety and security, stimulate our local economy, extend affordability, and provide a supportive and nurturing environment in which to raise our children.
